DECC announces plans to meet 2020 carbon reduction targets In the news
15 July 2009
The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan sets out the government’s route map to a low carbon country. It sets out how the UK will meet the target cut in emissions of 34 per cent (on 1990 levels) by 2020. A 21 per cent reduction has already been delivered – equivalent to cutting emissions entirely from four cities the size of London.

The Transition Plan states that by 2020:
• More than 1.2 million people will be in green jobs
• 7 million homes will have benefited from whole house makeovers
• More than 1.5 million households will be supported to produce their own clean energy
• 40 per cent of electricity will be from low carbon sources, from renewables, nuclear and clean coal
• We will be importing half the amount of gas that we otherwise would
• The average new car will emit 40 per cent less carbon than now
